How to Use Lighting In the Kitchen

Lighting is one of the most important elements of kitchen design. If you’re building a brand new kitchen or giving your existing interior a makeover, taking a little extra time to plan your lighting scheme will help your transformation to be even more successful. So whether you’re planning on using spotlights, uplights, LEDs or any other form of lighting in your kitchen, here’s how to make the most of your interior illumination.

Practical lighting

First and foremost, the lighting in your kitchen needs to be practical. If you love to cook and prepare delicious meals for your friends and family, you need a space that’s properly lit and easy to work in. Spotlights and LEDs are great for kitchen lighting as they’re bright, stylish and versatile. Install LEDs beneath your wall cupboards to illuminate your work surfaces or place spotlights under units or on the ceiling to provide lighting in your preparation areas.

Mood lighting

If your kitchen is the heart of your home, it’s important you think about how you’re going to light the space in the evenings and when you’re entertaining. The practical lighting that you’ve installed to help you prepare food will probably be too bright for more atmospheric occasions, so you’ll need to invest in lamps and ceiling lights that are a little more subtle.

Ask your lighting provider to install a dimmer switch on your main overhead light to give you control over the level of illumination in the space. You can also use floor lamps to add height to your lighting scheme and table lamps to provide pools of illumination around the space. The more flexible you make your lighting plan, the easier it will be to create the perfect mood in your kitchen.

Open plan living

Planning a lighting scheme for a kitchen can be a real challenge. However, if your kitchen opens out onto a living or dining area, you’ll really have to put your thinking cap on when planning your illumination. As well as designing mood lighting and practical lighting for the cooking area, you’ll need to install stylish lighting in the dining or living space. Putting in all of this lighting at once will help you to create a unified scheme and will make it easier for you to design a lighting plan that works in every part of the space.

Place a low pendant light over your dining table to provide illumination for your evening meals and use table lamps and spotlights to brighten up the corners and alcoves. Dimmer switches can also be used in open plan kitchen/dining/ living rooms to help you balance out the lighting and define the different areas.
